Week 5

Weekend Rundown
Week 5

Greetings and welcome to another instalment of the Weekend Rundown. This week we recap some of the action that took place at the Soccerplexe between the Broncos and Panthers of NCAA division and the CFL division’s Bills and 49ers. The Broncos were coming off a win the weekend prior over the Bengals and were looking to continue their winning ways against the Panthers who were also coming off a huge win over the Eagles 2 weeks prior, before going on a bye. Both teams were missing players, none more than the Broncos who only had 3 active players just before kickoff. The Panthers were in the same predicament missing 4 starters but filled out an otherwise undermanned roster with 7 active players.

The Panthers started with the ball and for the most part the drive looked promising with Aaron George stepping in at quarterback. George looked to start off with a quick throw to Emma McCuaig who made a play across the middle and took it upfield for 5 yards. George followed this up with a 15 yard run to the sideline and a first down. Looking to strike first and get the Panthers on the board first, George threw an ill-advised interception to Enzo Lalande who ended the Panthers drive and set up the Broncos with decent field position. Ayden Conroy stepped in for the Broncos and threw a quick pass, hitting Lalande in stride for the first points on the day. The Broncos elected to go for 2pts where quarterback Marco Dubé connected with Conroy to make good on the attempt going up 8-0. The Panthers attempted to get back to where they were prior to the interception, with George leading the way with a huge pass to James Higginbot for a 20 yard catch and run before being flagged by Khayden Denton (4 flags on the day). George then ran 15 yards, nearing the red zone and looking to finish the drive with a score, unfortunately the Panthers couldn’t keep it going having the drive stall and giving the ball back to the Broncos on downs. Dubé was up next looking to put together another scoring drive hitting Avana Willis in the middle of the field where she made a couple tacklers miss before being flagged. The Panthers looked to push back by forcing a turnover, by way of Aaron George coming up with a huge interception, halting the drive and giving them one more opportunity just before the half. But after 2 plays they (Panthers) ran out of time and went into the half. The Broncos would put up three more scores ending all hopes of a comeback, with two pick sixes by Logan Gonzalez and a rushing score from Enzo Lalande.

Final Broncos 28 Panthers 6

BILLS vs 49ers

Bills vs. 49ers was a tight game throughout the matchup as both teams were looking to establish ground with the playoffs approaching. Bills quarterback Tomas Vergara looked to start things off going to Ricardo DiZazzo for a quick catch and run picking up 8 yards before being flagged by James Dorzin. The drive came to an end after Niners Madden Laberge came away with a contested interception. Niners got their opportunity, with great field position Dorzin turned on the jets running for a first down. With their second attempt Dorzin found Madden Laberge in the corner of the end zone for 6. The 2pt conv attempt was unsuccessful, giving the ball back to the Bills. Both Vergara and Awan Qadhi combined quarterback duties for the Bills leading them to a huge touchdown drive with multiple players catching the football including DiZazzo, Ethan Paul, Vas Koussioulas and even Vergara (Tomas), who ended the drive with a touchdown to take the lead after a 2pt conv was completed to DiZazzo. Bills went up 8-6 before half. Following the break the Niners started with the ball and they fully intended to make due on their drive with Quarterback James Dorzin making plays with his feet and arm leading the way on a 8 play drive before ending up in the endzone to go up 12-8. The Bills got the ball back and did some marching of their own with Vergara taking charge and putting together a long drive of his own connecting with multiple pass catchers yet again before ending the drive with a beautiful pass to his brother Mateo Vergara with the tippity tap catch and score in the back of the endzone (the 2pt conv was unsuccessful). Bills went up 14-12 with the Niners wanting to finish this game with another tight game victory as Dorzin continued to show why he’s that guy leading his team on another long drive for a huge score and successful 2 pt conversion attempt putting them up for good.

Week 4 Recap

Weekend Rundown
Week 4

We have reached the mid season point, where teams are starting to find their identity  and get themselves ready for the quickly approaching playoffs. There were 3 games this past weekend, at our Lachine location, involving the CFL division’s Giants and Bills and NCAA’s Bucs, Browns, Broncos & Bengals, with the latter teams playing in the late window. We saw a nail bitter game between the 49ers & the packers. Let’s recap game 1 between the Giants & Bills.

Going into this game the Bills were looking for their 2nd win of the season. Whereas the Giants were just looking to keep pace in doing the same… Bills quarterback Izzy Ullah completed 75% of his passes on the day going 9 for 12 for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns one of which went to Ricardo DiZazzo who had 4 catches on 5 targets for 46 yards and a touchdown on the day. The Giants also had a big name player going to work in, Tristan Neil, who had 5 grabs for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns with one being the game winner to bring the Giants record to 2-2 on the year while the Bills need to regroup after falling to 1-3. I have no doubt they’ll (Bills) be able to do just that with a strong core of talent with the likes of Jailen Chopra (2 catches 16 yards and a touchdown), Mateo Vergara (3 catches for 27 yards and a interception) and of course the aforementioned, Izzy Ullah leading the way. Better days are ahead for the Bills.

Final Giants 21 Bills 20

The Bucs and Browns squared off in the mid day primer and the Browns came to play as they managed to put up three scores in the first half with little to no resistance. Both teams were looking to add a W in the win column but that’s why the games are played, someone has to win and someone has to lose… the Browns most definitely came to take care of work. Quarterback James Lavinskas was on top of his game connecting with receiver Sarah Bruneau in the flats, where she turned it upfield for a huge touchdown to put her team on the board first. They (Browns) followed up with a 2pt conversion attempt and cashed in. The Bucs were up next looking to put up some points of their own. They started off with a short run to the sideline and followed it up with an unfortunate pick six as the Browns took a 13-0 lead (the second convert attempt was unsuccessful). After the Bucs were turned over on downs, on their 2nd drive, the Browns put up another score this time on the ground by way of Holden Ghandey bringing their lead advantage by 3 scores. The Bucs did their best to keep pace, but they just couldn’t find a way to sustain drives and manufacture points until quarterback Carmelo Montano was able to rip off a 20 yard run for a huge touchdown just before the half and the last of the points scored for the remainder of the game.

Final Browns 20 Bucs 6

Are the mighty 49ers starting to show cracks in their armour? After a fairly close game with the Bills last week, we expected the Amani hosang led team to play disciplined football and control the momentum of the game with ease- The Packers however had other plans. What looked to be a lopsided game on paper was nothing short of a good old fashion grinder. Defensively they made it difficult for the the 49ers to move the ball. Hendrix Gourgeon displayed his talents on defense by keeping star receiver Madden Labege in check and finished the day with 2 clutch interceptions. The Packers entered the second half with a two score lead with the help of their go to receiver Shelby Gaba who did his best impression of 2021 Davantae Adams. Was it finally happening? Was this the moment that the charismatic Coach Richard put the entire league on notice? Well we definitely believed it.. in fact I think the entire building believed it.......except Felix Lalande.. just  when packers QB Macbeth was going to put the game away with a routine pass to the flats to his trusted centre Kyliam it ended up going the other way for 6 in the hands of Mr Showtime. The following drive Coach Jean turned his defense up a notch returning another interception to house! They say what separates a championship team from the rest is that when times are difficult they always find a way to WIN and that is what the 9ers did, with 3 plays left James Dorzin found Amani Ho Sang for a 40 yard score and ran in the 2 point conversion for the WIN!

Final 49ers 27 Packers 26

Week 3 Recap

FSFFL Weekend Rundown

Returning from the holiday layoff, the FSFFL got off to running start as the Broncos and Vikings squared off in their week 3 matchup live from the Soccerplexe in Lachine. Coming into the game I expected there to be some sluggish play. But that’s the thing about Flag Football when you’re a baller, you ball and the Vikes were all balling out over the under manned Broncos squad, who were short an estimated four to five players.  Between quarterbacks Marco Dube and speedster Ayden Conroy, the Broncos couldn’t seem to get things rolling. The Vikings, Jordel Springer, had a total of four interceptions which helped carry his team to victory. After the game I got a chance to speak to Jor on his mindset coming into the game. The uber talented and playful Sonic Springer was asked what he did to prepare for the game his response was “I turned on the gloves, that’s about it!” What else can I say… big time players make big time plays. Evidence of that can be found in the highlight reel as a follow up. On the bright side, for the Broncos, after getting a chance to see them play before the break, I can honestly say they’ll be fine heading into their next game, hopefully at full capacity.

Final score Vikings 28  Broncos 8

                                                                            Panthers vs Eagles

In the second game of our triple header, the Panthers and Eagles took the field, with the Panthers looking for their first win of the season. The Eagles struck first with a quick score and the Panthers responded immediately with a score of their own and took a commanding lead shortly thereafter. Quarterback Simon Therrien threw for a whopping 5 touchdown passes, three of which went to the Peat twins (in Remi and Levi). If you were to ask me how I tell them apart. I wouldn’t be able to tell you that, but I will say their play did all the identifying for them on the score sheet. As they combined for 4 catches 101 yards and 3 touchdowns. Jayden Cauvier also had himself a game, as he made due with 2 catches for 55 yards and two touchdowns leading to a huge victory over the Eagles. Speaking to the [Eagles] coaches after the game, they touched on the teams down play, with the long layoff at hand. The Eagles did have  a few bright moments with stellar plays by their top tier QB  Blake Cyprinski and the nifty speedster Logan Gonzalez. A little food for thought from yours truly, sometimes you just got to throw away a bad performance and get ready for the next opportunity to take the field again. Like the Broncos, the Eagles had a bad showing over this past weekend, but with the coaching staff and players on their roster they should be able to make due, ride the ship and get off the schneid.

Final score Panthers 34 Eagles 13

On Saturday January 14th the Vikings will play the Eagles in Brossard at 4PM and the Broncos host the Bengals at 2PM in Lachine.
